Did you ever wonder why wisdom teeth are called wisdom teeth? Is it because they possess some source of divine knowledge? Fortunately not, because they are often problematic when it comes to your oral health, and often have to be removed.
Wisdom teeth are called wisdom teeth simply for the fact that they tend to come in between the ages of 17-21, which is an age where we are thought to have acquired a certain amount of “wisdom” (tell that to my 17 year old).
Some patients get all four of their wisdom teeth, some get none, and some fall somewhere in between. For many patients, wisdom teeth cause no problems. But for others, they can be quite problematic.
You may consider having your wisdom teeth removed if they are:
- Causing excessive crowding
- Causing problems for your alignment or bite
- Causing pain or sensitivity
- Impacted (they are twisted, turned, or at an angle so they are unable to erupt properly)
If you are experiencing any of the above problems with your wisdom teeth coming in, it would be wise to come in and see us at Neighborhood Smiles.
